The Elfstedentocht takes place in Friseland, is a tour through frozen canals and lakes linking eleven cities of the province. There is a stated regulatory requirement for the race to take place that the ice must be a minimum thickness of 15 centimetres along the entirety of the course. Since the Elfstedentocht is such a rare occurrence, its declaration creates excitement all over the country. During winter time as soon as a few days pass with sub-zero temperatures, the media start speculating about the chances for an Elfstedentocht. Last one took place in the winter of 1997. Leeuwarden, the main city in the area is the begining and finishing point. almost 10 years ago
