We are planning on driving Greymouth/Queenstown/Te Anau/Dunedin/Lake Tekapo and on to Christchurch. What are the general condition of the roads and should we expect ice/snow on the roads?
The roads are quite good - some dual carriageways and some smaller roads.
Driving from Greymouth via Arthurs Pass to Christchurch was probably the most challenging part of the journey for us - the weather was awful - raining and really windy. We were in a campervan so the drive was difficult. The road itself is not great with some sheer drops and twists and turns, but the views are fab.
We did a similar route to you, but in the November and there was still a bit of snow in the high parts. about 8 years ago
conditions of the roads overall are pretty good, but yes, do expect frost, rain and occasionally snow on the roads. for that southern part of the country in July, it is advisable to carry chains, and know how to use them on your car or van. almost 8 years ago
