If you are traveling in New Zealand during the summer months how many days in advance do you need to book a hostel?
I'm gonna be in NZ 5 weeks but I don't want to book the whole 5 weeks in advance in case my travel plans change but I'm afraid I will not find a room , so I wonder how far in advance I need to look to make sure I have a place. (First time staying in hostel)

It depends a bit on where you're going, some places will sell out or get super expensive quite quickly (like Queenstown) and others should be okay (like say Wellington or Auckland). If you can plan at least a few days ahead, you should be fine, but if it's price you're booking based on, book as early as possible. over 2 years ago

As early as possible I think is the correct approach, since we traveled NZ during winter and we should book in some cases a month earlier. For summer, a month earlier perhaps is not adequate.
I used Automobile Association (AA New Zealand) for asking -free of charge- help to this, you might find it useful too. over 2 years agoAnswered by Daniel viaWorldNomads.com

The only places I ever saw my first choice hostel full during the summer were Queenstown, Wellington, and Christchurch. In Christchurch and Wellington, there were other hostels, just farther from where I wanted to be. Queenstown, however, was completely booked. Luckily, I had booked in advance, I just couldn't extend for as many nights as I wanted. over 2 years ago

We were there last summer , and the day before was all the noticed required except for Mount Cook . It does get busy around the end on January in Queenstown due to Chinese New Year (lots of Chinese visitors) but they stay in high end accomodation. We booked online all the way no hiccups at all. over 2 years ago
