Does anyone know of any good itinerates with road maps for around 21 - 30 days...baring in mind we are looking at driving for around a month and would like to see the whole country, so both North and South Islands?
Many thanks people!
We hired ours direct from Pacific Horizon and they gave us maps and everything.
I also used a variety of sites such as http://www.newzealand.com/travel/getting-to-around-nz/driving-routes/driving-routes-home.cfm to help me plan.
We started in the South Island and spent more time here than we had originally planned. I was exhausted by being on the road for so long so when we got to the North Island, we hung around Wellington for a few days.
I liked the campsites - Big 10. They were well equipped, had all the facilities, were reasonably priced, and really geared up for travellers. We met some great people at some of the sites. about 7 years ago
I think 4-5 weeks is definitely minimum time for trying to cover both North and South Islands. We rented a car on North Island and stayed in hostels over 14 days and then headed to South Island where we rented a spaceship (campervan) for 18 days.
I wrote up our itineraries on Make Travel Fair, you might find them to be a helpful starting point.

It's Cymen here from www.rankers.co.nz
All the campervan companies in NZ have been independently reviewed here. We tour around NZ and survey travellers oursleves as well as receiving reviews online.
All the best with your time in Aotearoa!
