We have a week on the North Island of NZ. Any suggestions on what we should see? Planning on hiring a campervan.

If you surf? or like nice beaches... don't miss Raglan on the west coast and Gisbourne on the East coast.

Taupu has awesome volcanoes and cheap skydiving

Wellington is the best city to hang in. over 7 years ago

Bay of Islands, north of Auckland, is great - sort of like a mini whitsundays. get out to urupukapuka Island for some great views of the bay. over 7 years ago

    Thanks for the replies guys!

We need to be in Wellington for a wedding on the Saturday, then have till Friday to get back to Auckland. Is it reasonable to get up to the Bay of Islands in this time? or should we spend our time travelling back to Auckland via something other than SH1? over 7 years ago

    Hi there,

    It's Cymen here from www.rankers.co.nz.

SH1 wouldn't be one of the best scenic drives in the country! Certainly, you are best to drive quickly between Wellington and Waiouru which would be the worst drive in NZ in my opinion.

There are lots of stops between Taupo and Rotorua which are worth a look while a detour away from SH1 at Rotorua and up through tauranga and Coromandel would be worthwhile.

Their are lots of little gems on this drive like the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway -
    http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/bay-of-plenty/tauranga-area/karangahake-gorge-historic-walkway/

and if you have a campervan, this is a fine spot near along a lesser known driving route to Auckland
    http://www.arc.govt.nz/albany/main/parks/our-parks/parks-in-the-region/tapapakanga/

For customer reviews on Campervans see here

And all activities in NZ at www.rankers.co.nz

If you go non stop then you will be able to get up to the Bay of Islands but there are places like the Coromandel that are similar and require far less of a drive.

    Happy travels

When you have finished driving the mainland go to waihiki (i think its called) which has a car ferry across and takes about 40 mins from auckland - its got great scenery, lovely feel and some great restaurants and wineries... over 7 years ago

If you like to get away from the cities the central plateau has wide open spaces and volcanoes (my favourite part of the island), or head up East Cape (north from Gisbourne) for some lovely remote bush areas. over 7 years ago
