I'm travelling to NZ for a roller derby bout at the end of October & staying on for a week afterwards. I'll be on my own (no transport) so looking for things to do during the day, places to eat, parks, pubs, cafes, to chill out in and "must see" things within the city, or easily accessible via public transport. I'm into Lomography, Antique/ vintage/ second hand shopping and obviously roller derby, so anything you might consider "alternative" would be right up my alley.

There are a lot of second hand and retro-type stores on k-road (just all the way up queen street). You might also like Newmarket (Stores), Ponsonby (Has some art galleries) and Parnell (Auckland Museum and Food), CBD (Skytower) or take the ferry from Britomart to Devonport and climb the hill for a scenic view. If you have more free time get to Waiheke Island for a 2 days, a 40mins Ferry ride away from central Auckland. It's a pretty nice and quiet island, can rent a bike there or do some wine tastings and tours, or go to the beach if it is not to cold for you.

Use the link bus to get around, either the green one or the new yellow-orange busses - see www.maxx.co.nz . They drive around the city center and the suburbs around the cbd every few minutes, cost $1.80 and you always end up at britomart in the city center sooner or later if you catch the green or yellow bus. about 5 years ago

I would take the ferry to Waiheke Island. Lots of accomm options. Hitchiking is easy and fun. Or rent a scooter! I would get OUT of Auckland and spend that time on a lovely peaceful island with stunning wines, beaches and people. :) almost 5 years ago
