Flying into Christchurch tomorrow night, looking for some ideas on what to do and where to go! We will have a hire car and happy to do some driving for a few hours or so...
How long do you have? What do you like doing? Just adults, or kids too?
There's a lot of good walking and biking tracks around the Port Hills on the south side of town, and places that will rent you a bike for the day and drive you to the top if you're into that. Or take a drive along the Summit Road for some beaut views. Akaroa is an hour and a bit away by car, and is a very relaxing wee town to visit. Akaroa and Lyttelton both have boat trips to see (or swim with) the dolphins: I believe the Akaroa trip is better.
Hanmer Springs is an hour and a half away by car; it has thermal hot pools and some pleasant forest walks. In town, the Antarctic Centre is (expensive but) interesting, the botanic gardens are free and relaxing, the Art gallery is apparently well rated if you're into that sort of thing (I'm not) and for a couple of bucks you can climb the spire of the Cathedral in the middle of town.
With the current weather the beaches are nice (Sumner for playing/walking/looking and coffee, Taylor's Mistake for surfing, Brighton for a good long walk/run). about 7 years agoAnswered by Roy Britten via Travellr.com
