Do I need a 4WD to do this? How are busses / trains? Is It possible to see the more interesting parts of the region without heading offroad?

    There are roads in that region and you'll find plenty of guides that'd love to help you go and visit the northern regions. over 5 years ago

    You can also try to contact the official tourism dept
    At times they can set you up with a jeep and driver. You can drive on the KKH up to the border area with china. The views are stunning. In our experience roads were often closed, land slides, etc. Having an experienced local driver and guide was a life saver. We did this trip in 1986, not sure how the situation is at moment, something to very seriously. It is however a trip of a lifetime. over 5 years ago
