Although I've never been I really want to go to St Petersburg. Lots of interesting history to that place.
Especially this story about the crazy Russian queen and her ice palace

My tip if you plan to go here read up on the Siege of Leningrad. One of the worst battles in history.

If you are into art the Hermitage Museum is one of the biggest, oldest and has some ridiculous percentage of the art in the world.

Heard so many crazy stories about Russia though! Tough country to get into and stay in! over 7 years ago

Yeah in terms of culture and art you cant really go past St Petersburg. The city was designed to be a European city so it looks like many other european towns, most notably Dutch cities because of all its cannals. But you definately know that its a different place and has a lot of wired Russian charm. Read up on Peter the Great before you go to get an insight.

If your there you will probably check out St Isaacs cathedral, its the most impressive cathedral ive ever seen. Also yes Niko the Hermitage is an inspiring place (read up on the october revolution for more stories about the outside square). Also in Russia dont be afraid to jump in a black cab. Almost every car will stop if you stand by the side of the road and wave your arm. Point to a spot on a map and write 200 Rubles on it. 200 should get you around most of the town.

Dont go past Moscow tho either, crazy crazy town. Red square and the Kremlin are the obvious sights to see. In terms of nightlife check out the hungry duck. It has a reputation for been the most wild and debaucherous club in Europe. There are worse but its definately up there.

Perhaps the biggest tip I have for Russia is DO NOT under any circumstance loose your passport!!! They like you to carry it on you at all times and dont be surprised if a Russian policeman sticks a machinegun in your face and asks you for it in a rather abrupt manner. They're mostly hoping you dont have it so you have to bribe them (500 Rubles I hear is the appropriate bribe). What you can do is have it locked up at your hotel (providing its safe) and carry a few hotel business cards on you and then show the cop/soldier that. They wont be happy but they'll back off. over 7 years ago
