Going by taxi - is it safe?

over 7 years ago about South Africa

I'm heading to South Africa for business and I will go to Joburg and Cape Town. Arriving on the airport I want to catch a cab to the city. Is there anything I should watch out for? Is it safe? And do they have taximeter to avoid a rip-off?

Going by taxi is safe, and they do have meters but dont be afraid to haggle or settle for a fixed price! In Cape Town I wouldnt pay any ore then R85 from the airport to the city centre, as the airport is only 20 mins away!!

Goiung by taxi is safe. Make sure they lock your door tho becuse you don't want to be sitting at some lights and have someone come up and demand money from you. I went on my own and felt safe the whole time. Make sure when you get in the taxi you feel safe with the person driving you and always make sure you confirm the price before you hop in the taxi! They can try and rip you off.

In Joburg it can be quite scary been on your own. I spoke to come south africians on my way there and they said to always keep your bags in front of you the whole time and be alert. At the airport there are so many police around so you will feel safe. over 7 years ago

At Joburg airport they have metered taxis. Fancy mercs with well-suited drivers. It all looks sorted but just be attentative of your belongings... like anywhere in the world you could find youself the target of a crime. Especially at traffic lights and stop streets. Other than that, keep an eye out for open air tour buses. Pretty kool experience, just double check the weather ;-) "PeaceBeYaAdventure" over 7 years ago
