The relationship between North Korea just got a bit cold and I am wondering if this is likely to be dangerous

I wondered about this when I was planning my honeymoon. The North started shelling South Korea and advisory notices went up on the FCO. We decided to go to Japan instead, but the tsunami and earthquake hit 3 days before travel...

Anyway, when I enquired about safety I sought advice from colleagues who had people in offices in South Korea. Basically, it was "don't worry". There is always tension between the North and South regardless of military action.

Take all the necessary precautions and check with your FCO. about 5 years ago

Technically they are still at war since the 50s. Went there not long after the shellings last yr, even went to panmunjeon. Seems pretty safe to me about 5 years ago

There's absolutely no reason to worry about the North Korea situation when planning a visit to South Korea. The Western media have a habit of blowing it grossly out of proportion. about 5 years ago

The shelling (if it happened - the North says it was just construction noise!) was in the ocean near Yeongpyeong Island - a similar incident there a year ago resulted in 4 deaths. But this is out in the ocean about 120 kms from Seoul.
Here's a BBC report with the details.
I don't think you have to worry about the North when visiting South Korea..... this sort of sabre rattling has been going on for years.
