What area should we stay in Barcelona...we LOVE the St. Germain area of Paris and want a safe neighborhood - feel in Barcelona - first time
If you like the St Germain area in Paris, I would recommend you to stay on Passeig de Gracia or in the Gracia district. Otherwise, if you want something more typical and historical, you should consider El Gothico.
Both districts are quite and safe and really close to all touristic areas.
As for choosing a hotel, I'm working for a selection of hotels having a great selection of boutique and design hotels in Barcelona (splendia.com) let me know if I can be of help regarding that matter.

I love Barcelona! Am returning there in October. Any hotel on or near the Plaza Catalunya would serve you well. This is where Las Ramblas, the main pedestrian walkway, begins and you'll find lots of shopping, restaurants and entertainment of all kinds. There are plenty of Metro stops around, and the public transportation is Barcelona is top notch! over 7 years ago
Barceloneta is right on the beach, and has some fantastic restaurants and bars. It is also a short walk to the Rambla. The metro works as well. If you are planning on traveling throughout Spain with a homebase in Barcelona, then I'd suggest the Gran Torre Catalunya hotel as it is directly across from the Barcelo Sants train/metro station.
However, re-reading your post, it's clear you want to find a place in the Bari Gotic (Gothic Quarter) which is fantastic and full of people / shops. It is near everything, and great for nightlife. over 7 years ago
I was traveling through Spain as a backpacker and stayed at Sant Jordi Hostel while in Barcelona - http://www.santjordihostels.com/hostel-lluria/
Both of their hostels are in great locations and I'd highly recommend getting something in the vicinity of either one. Barcelona itself is very easy to get around thanks to the train network, so you'll find that wherever you end up, you won't be presented by too many challenges when it comes to seeing the sights. about 7 years ago
