I wouldn't venture outside Khartoum if I were you, certainly not to the borders with South Sudan or Darfur, but the capital seems (by all reports) to be relatively safe, especially because you're being given a driver. Treat him well and listen to his advice on safety and you should be fine. Just check with your travel insurerer about coverage for Sudan - some governments (not the US) advise against all travel to Sudan, which has severe implications for your cover, so double check... Even ask the seminar hosts about what insurance they provide (and what security measures they have in place). What a brilliant opportunity. I'd love for you to share your experiences of Khartoum with the community when you return. Maybe write a travel blog on worldnomads.com?
