Hey folks, my brother and I are doing a trip to Thailand in January and part of February. I was thinking that it might be fun to buy some cheap motorcycles in Thailand, drive down (possibly through Laos and Cambodia) and make our way to Koh Phangan for the full moon party and then sell our bikes. Does anyone have experiences with this? Pearls of wisdom? I have heard that it is unwise for foreigners to try the motorcycle thing in Bangkok, so we will be avoiding that.

Jake, I'm assuming you have a valid motorcycle license from your home country? If not, you're going to find a few problems.
It's complicated, but everything is explained here:
If you do have a m/c license, get the International Driving permit and you'll be riding legally in Thailand and Laos, but Cambodia requires you to get a local license (it's all in the article).
But then there's the road danger.... Thailand has one of the highest road fatality rates in the world, and the other places are not far behind. If you're not an experienced or confident rider, you might want to think of an alternative adventure (and there are plenty of them).

    • THanks for the advice! After looking around a little bit more of some difficulties with registration and all that when going across borders, I'm thinking I'll stick to one country with it. Thanks for the advice! Jake about 6 years ago
