You could try this infamous market just south of Bangkok: http://journals.worldnomads.com/simon_monk/story/35426/Thailand/The-famous-train-market-of-Mae-Klong

My favourite area was the far north-east, up near the lao border. Much more 'authentic' than many typical tourist places. over 5 years ago

North East is my pick for sure! Chiang Rai, I got truly stuck there for weeks, lax small place, easy to blend with locals at the Peace house (bar), awesome people and cool as things to do nearby : Black House blew my mind, and White temple is very cool too!
Pai is really rated highly by many, its pretty sweet if you like riverside and bungalow living.
The islands can be reeeeally touristy, starbucks etc so very tailored and expensive in comparison, but a fun party with other tourists if youre into that! over 5 years ago

Ive been to thailand 3 times now and the north is very different to the south. Just got back from patong which was party party, But you dont have to go far on a scooter to get away from the party scene. Karoon beach (phuket) was really nice and still had lots of shops.

I also loved Chiang Rai and the treking you can do from there into the hill tribes gives you a different perspective on Thailand to what you would get in Koh Samui or Phuket. Also Chang Mai i have been to twice, great markets and food. Bangkok is good to go and see but dont plan on being there for long! If you just want to relax and snorkle look at the little islands around phuket or around koh samui.

I have also heard amazing things about laos which you can get to from Chiang Rai but have not been myself!

    Enjoy! over 5 years ago

I'd have to recommend Wat Phu Thok, a meditation wat atop a lofty sandstone outcrop in the far NE ... hard to get to but a very unique experience. I've got some photo's somewhere from 20 years ago!
