I stayed at Ban's diving and did both my open water and advanced PADI certificates.

Ban's is awesome! They are the biggest dive school on the island have accommodation right on the beach with bar and restaurant. The dive instructors were awesome - I had a bloke from the UK who was really good. Everyone was really helpful and I met lots of cool people.

I think it cost me about 10 or 12,000 baht for the course, including three nights accommodation. The prices are roughly the same all around the island.

Don't forget to visit Shark Bay and go snorkelling with the reef sharks.

We went through Scuba Junction, (A little 2 min walk up the path from Bans..) its around the same price as Ian has mentioned however you are in training courses with maximum four people. Bans can be up to 10-20 people so you miss out on personal training. Prices for open was 10,000 and then its 15% discount if you purchase more towards advanced...

    great crew there!

How long are you travelling for? Away for a few months or just a short stay on Koh Tao?
An interesting option if you're planning on sticking around is:
You can start out with just the PADI open water course, and if you enjoy it, upgrade to a longer package. Gives you a great way to earn money whilst you're traveling. almost 7 years ago
