Jumeriah seems a little out of my price range. I wonder about sh zayed road as it seems to stretch on forever, would walking anywhere be an option? We are travelling at the start of April. What is al barsha like? Things seem more in my price range there!! I would really appreciate any suggestions.

The Al Barsha area is fine. It's close to the Mall of the Emirates and other great facilities. It's only a couple of kilometers to the old part of the city (which is worth a visit) an the gold markets. taxis in Dubai are very reliable, safe, clean and cheap, so why walk when it's 30 to 35 degrees C? Dubai is kind of like a clean and wholesome version of Los Angeles... lots of malls, and freeways.
I stayed in Dubai a few years ago and went even further downmarket than you, we were in Jumeriah Gardens in a 'local' hotel. The only drawback was no mini-bar in the room!

No matter where you stay, you will end up going to another side of town eventually for tourist activities. I agree with staying at a well known international brand of hotel, even an Ibis would be cheaper than many of the more expensive options. There is a Radisson near Dubai Mall too. over 3 years ago
