There's plenty of sites that charge admission but what do you recommend doing for sure that happens to be free?

I was there last May for the first time. I spent my time walking around the streets and really getting a feel for Edinburgh. There are lots of alleys or buildings with plaques on explaining their history and you would miss this if you were not out walking around. Stroll through the medieval Old Town or the Georgian New Town to see fine examples of history and architecture.

    For free:

The City Art Gallery is great
The Writers Museum and Makars Court next door
Is Holyrood free? If so, then go and visit it over 5 years ago

So what did you end up doing, Aaron? ;)

A walking tour is a must-do. Google for free route maps. For great views climb Calton Hill and, if you're feeling energetic, Arthur's Seat. over 5 years ago

Several months in Edinburgh and I was able to do all sorts, both free and others not so free.
    My favorite free things:
    - Just walking the medival streets of the city. Such wonderful views await a person.
    - Have a coffee in the Starbucks on Princes Street where views of the castle are great. (okay not totally free but very cheap to do).
    - Some of the art galleries are free and I enjoyed that.
    - The Tartan weaving mill was cool. Definitely more a shop but for free, it was impressive.
    - Climbing up Arthur's Seat. Dont' confuse Arthur's Seat with the Salisbury Crags.
    - and of course, any festival you can go to such as the annual torchlight procession over 5 years ago
