What interesting things are there to see outside of Edinburgh in August. I'm visiting for the Military Tattoo and would be keen to hire a car and spend several days letting out of Edinburgh - either on day trips or on an extended mission around southern Scotland. Can anyone suggest anything that I shouldn't miss?
Definitely head to Stirling (it's one of my favorite cities in Scotland) and check out all the historical stuff - the William Wallace Memorial is amazing, and not to be missed. It's a bit of a walk to the top, but it's worth it to feel like the king of Scotland at the top. You can also tour around the city's old jail, Stirling Castle, etc. There's a lot of interesting and fun historical stuff to see and do, and Stirling Castle is a bit more open to the public than Edinburgh Castle was (at least when I went). There's also quite a few decent restaurants in Stirling, and if you're into it, a couple of OK nightclubs filled to the brim with drunk 20somethings. The hostels are cheap there, also, so if you'd like, you could make an overnight trip of it and go check out Perth (also nice) the next day. about 9 years ago
