Hands down, Meal Ticket on San Pablo & Gilman. Annies in Claremont hood of Oakland, during business hours of the fruit and veg market, the Oakland Grill on 3rd has a lot of local character. I love Cafe 817 on Washington, especially during the Friday farmers market. Mamas Royal on Broadway has great retro vibe. For southern menu Aunt Marys on Telegraph in Temescal, or Brown Sugar in west Oakland, which is in a safe if saran part of Oakland. Not to overlook north Berkeley area, but Jodies on Masonic off Solano is a gem of a place. 6 stools and a few tables outside, it's a local institution and fave, with no shortage of menu combos and zingy banter between the regulars. over 5 years ago
