We stayed in St Marks Place, East Village in October in an apartment booked through airbnb. The booking process was very easy and we had no problems. I would certainly use it again. The neighbourhood you choose will depend on what you like. For shopping and shows, midtown is probably better, if you want a more neighbourhood feel then the Village might be more for you. In the East Village some apartments can be very noisy (particularly if first floor above a bar) so you might want to ask the renter if that would be a problem for you over 8 years ago

If you haven't been to NYC before, Midtown is probably the best location. You are smack bang in the middle of things, good access to subways and a lot of stuff (Times Square, Empire State) is walking distance.

Try Hotel Stanford - fantastic location, very close to Broadway, subway and an excellent pizza shop!!! Good standard and affordable.

I just use Tripping.com. They have a lot more listings than Airbnb because they are like a Kayak site for vacation rentals. In most destinations I go with HomeAway but for NYC I have my eye on a nice place on Roomorama. That's what I love - you can search all the rental sites in one place. over 8 years ago

I would say stay in the West Village if you can find a place. Great area, central to the city and a great way to experience NYC. I also agree with Magda about Tripping! In places for NYC, it is always good to be able to see ALL the options from multiple websites. over 8 years ago

My wife and I have stayed in 5 Airbnb places in NYC so far, and all have been great - we've written up some of our tips at http://www.airbnbpro.com

As for location, our favourite is the Upper West Side, because we like to try to live 'like locals' as much as possible. Midtown doesn't have nearly as many interesting bars and restaurants, and with the subway you're never too far from the action anywhere you go. about 8 years ago
