Laguna beach or Newport beach in one day

On my way from San Diego to Los Angeles this july I would like to make a stop for a few hours in either Laguna beach or Newport beach (or maybe both if this is possible?). Which one do you recommend and what should I see and do there?

    Go just south of Laguna to crystal cove state park, very nice 3 months ago

    Depends on your age and interests. Newport is more popular with younger people. I prefer Laguna Beach...less families. 3 months ago
