3 friends and I are planning to hire a car from JFK airport and travel for 2 weeks down the East Coast of the US.
What are some highlights or hidden gems we should not miss?
For example of our tastes:
Drug Enforcement Administration Museum, Virginia - awesome
Disneyland, Orlando - boring
JFK- to Philadelphia- fun city, great deals www.visitphilly.com Franklin Science Musuem, Philadelphia Art Museum, Independence Place, Franklin Court, and did i mention amazing food?
Next since you are heading to Florida, probably best to bypass the Jersey beaches and head from Philadelphia to Baltimore- check out the Fels Point area and the inner harbour. Some cool wateriside museums and spend the evening in Annapolis, one of the most engaging cities and home to the US Naval Academy.
(I may be out of sequence here) but if you are looking to see a bit of nature and are not interested in heading inland to check out the AT (Appalachian Trail) I would head to Chincoteague (there is a lovely Hampton Inn) and check out the outer Islands
on your way south, you may want to take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel for some amazing views. Charleston is a great town worth spending the night, Like Philadelphia, Baltimore and Annapolis it has a lot of history, is a great walking town and knows how to feed it's guests!
Savannah offers the best of Georgia, the people are charming, but watch out if you are there in the summer because soupy may be a mild term for the weather.

If you were to travel up the east coast, you would find cooler temperatures and perhaps less congestion. You could also visit eastern canada from Maine. If you are interested in heading up the coast- write back.

Just to report, the summer trip was fantastic.
Went slightly north to our friends in New Haven, CT
Then headed back to New York
,Virginia Beach, VI
,Tampa, FL (for a 5 day cruise)
,Fort Lauderdale, FL
This was all over a period of 1 month, so we got to see some places very well and some were a bit rushed. Most of the time it was stinking hot and the air conditioning was always freezing.
Favourite towns/cities were Philly, Savannah and Miami and Washington gets a thumbs up for the awesome and free musuems.
Most surprising was how green the whole coast was. I never imagined the US to have so many broad leafed trees, I though it was much more urban sprawl. almost 10 years ago
