If you want to stay cheaply in San Francisco (which is a MUST see city if you're in California) then I'd recommend the Green Tortoise hostel. I've stayed there a few times and they organise cheap activities every day to see the city. The hostel also runs adventure bus tours. I haven't been on one but a friend of mine has and he rated it - http://www.greentortoise.com/adventure.travel.html

Our National Parks are truly worth the time and with some careful planning you can find reasonable hotels within a short drive or save some money by camping If you are determined to stay in California and the west coast- it is less expensive when you get north of San Francisco. The Oregon coast is extremely beautiful. There are numerous hiking trails and cute towns. going inland, i love Eugene in the summer great craft fairs, wonderful people and very reasonable eats and lodging. Another favorite is Seattle, while more expensive it offers a plethora of free activities. Drive north to Port Angeles and hop a ferry for the one of the islands in the san juan chain- check out Orcas island and a very cute camping ground at Doe Bay.
IF you want to adventure to AZ- write back and i can advise on some wonderful ideas over 6 years ago
