The Hotel Pennsylvania is central - right across the street from Penn Station. Relatively cheap. It's historic and dated in several ways (read that not the most modern and fancy) but clean and within walking distance to lots of things (Times Square, Empire State Building, etc.) about 5 years ago

I stayed at the Union Hotel in Brooklyn, it was really nice and about $85 a night for a queen bed. You could always check somewhere like Offtrackplanet.com, they haven't written about Union but they have reviews of the better (and cheaper) hostels in NYC. about 5 years ago

I've had friends do pretty well on Priceline. IMO location and proximity to public transit is way more important than having sprawling space/amenities in your hotel (you'll be in New York, you want to be spending time away from your room!) although a breakfast perk would be nice. about 5 years ago

The Paramount Hotel is another good spot near Times Square (without feeling like it). I stayed there in December and had great access to Broadway as well. about 5 years ago

It's hard to recommend something based on how much "affordable" varies from person to person.

When I was last in NYC, I stayed at AKA Central http://www.hotelaka.com/locations/central_park/default.aspx

It was a bit under $200 a night, modern and extremely central. Based on that you should be able to do something cheaper if you don't care about the modern bit.

Assuming you're going there in the Summer, the "ideal" hotel would essentially be a small air conditioned room, with a bed and a shower. When I was there in the summer, the hotel room was just used to sleep, and cool down and wash off the sweat before venturing out again into the heat. about 5 years ago
