Can anyone recommend some decent and reasonably priced hotels which are not too far out of the centre of the city? We don't want to stay in a dive but we don't want to pay too much either!

My absolute best advice I can give is to use Priceline. Name your own price, and go as it will allow. I use it very frequently in NYC and regularly get 4 star hotel rooms between $160-$260 / night. I would highly recommend being careful going much below a 3 star hotel in NYC (you might pick up bed bugs, lol). over 7 years ago

Neighborhoods are a good way to sort through the confusion of staying in Manhattan. Want a quiet friendly neighborhood- consider Murray Hill, want to be in the hub of things- Times Square and off Broadway, looking for trendy- try the meat packing district, soho or west village.
You can find good deals on Quikbook.com, hotels.com as well as the (forementioned) Priceline, hotwire, orbitz etc over 7 years ago

If you don't mind booking rooms at short notice, you should check out the website www.hotwire.com. they have special offers - when you are lucky you get a room in a 4 star hotel for 60 $. over 7 years ago
