I am planning a month long backpacking trip in SE Asia from mid Sep to mid Oct. About 2.5 weeks is for Vietnam. I realize this is obviously too short for the whole country, so I need help with choosing a few places where I can travel by motorcycle.
I was planning to first fly to Hanoi and travel in the north part of the country (Sapa, Dong Van - Meo Vac pass, Halong Bay) and spend most of my time there. I plan to buy a second hand Russian Minsk and hopefully sell it again in Hanoi. From Hanoi, I plan to fly to HCMS and do a boat ride on the Mekong river before flying to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat. I might regret later for missing the city of Hue, but couldn't find an easy way to include it in this short trip.
It would be great if you can give feedback on the itinerary and in general riding a motorcycle in N. Vietnam.
I was in HCMC and met to young men from Holland that had purchased motorcycles in Saigon and drove the length of the country. They had no problems and found the locals very helpful. They were going to try and get the cycles sold before they left. almost 7 years ago
Vietnam has the second highest road fatality rate in the world, mostly because there is very little (probably none at all) compliance with road rules. Drink driving is common. Driver training is non-existent and enforcement of standards equally absent. Many roads have blind bends (doesn't stop traffic overtaking anyway), and are in poor condition. The chaos can be overwhelming. But in fact there are 3 rules; might equals right (give way to anything bigger), use your blinkers and don't hold back on the horn (use it to warn of your approach, use it to indicate a change of direction, use it to warn another vehicle of your position, hell just use it!)
There are many motorcycle tour companies that offer a safer alternative through guides with local knowledge. They can help you with the licensing problems too.
And don't forget to consider your travel insurance. make sure your policy covers you for the type/class of bike you use and that you are legally riding.

Hi, for your short time in Vietnam, it is a good advice for you to travel journey, driving motorcycle is quite dangerous.
And you have to remember that you need a visa to Vietnam. If you travel by air, it is the best and cheapest to apply Visa on arrival at http://govietnamvisa.com/
The Vietnam visa on arrival procedure is very simple as follows:
- You apply online by filling in the Vietnam visa application form and then make online payment by credit card, Paypal or Western Union
- Receive the Vietnam visa approval letter via email, print it out
- Get the Vietnam visa stamped in your passport at the arrival airport in Vietnam.
