Just wondered if anyone knows a way of getting directly from Sapa to Halong Bay, as we're keen to avoid having to go back to Hanoi. We don't want an organised tour. I've seen adverts online for private companies doing bus transfers between the two, but the information seems outdated.
Can anyone confirm if these are still running, or do we have to go back to Hanoi in between the two towns?
getting to halong bay directly is cost you an arm and legs, only via hanoi

I don't think that is good idea to go directly to Halong from Sapa. It is over 500km, so you will be very tired. However, if you are insist on doing that. Let have a look at this site:

From Sapa to Halong Bay, you should travel with the schedule below:
Move from Sapa to Hanoi by train, and then travel from Hanoi to Halong Bay by bus/car. It takes about 4 hours to travel from Hanoi to Halong by bus).
Besides, If you want to travel around Vietnam or Indochina also, let's get reference in my articles http://journals.worldnomads.com/becki/story/125178/Vietnam/My-experience-in-getting-cheap-flight-tickets over 3 years ago
In the past few months the modern road to Sapa (as far as Lao Cai, anyway) has opened and now there are buses as an option, including buses directly from Sapa to Halong Bay.
There were several agencies in Sapa offering direct bus trips when I was there a month ago. Here is an example bus for $28, but google for more:
Many buses are equipped with sleeper seats, so you are in a reclining position. That is for the overnight bus, but the day bus is the same bus. I do not recommend this for tall people, as these buses were designed for shorter bodies. That said, I found it a great way to travel during the day time and see the countryside instead of taking the overnight train.
I get the impression that the train offers a higher commission to the agents, because it seemed many "had not heard of these direct buses" and wanted to sell me a train ticket. over 3 years ago
The best thing I did was buy a hop on and hop off bus. I bought mine in Hanoi, however, but if you're travelling down to the South, definitely get one. It does stop at cities near Halong Bay, and from there you can book a tour (best option) or a night cruise (which I did). Also, there's an island in the middle of Halong Bay called Catba Island and it's freaking incredible. They have a hospital cave there, from the war. Anyway, off track, the bus ticket costed me $50AUD and you can take any bus you like, stopping at around 4/5 places from Hanoi and HCMC. Enjoy Vietnam, it's spectacular! over 3 years ago

Travel via Hanoi via bus to Ha Long City and from there don't go with a boring and expensive tour into Ha Long Bay but take the normal ferry to Cat Ba island! There is a beautiful national park, you can go kayaking by yourself between the carst-formations and visit the floating village. over 2 years ago
