I'm travelling to Vietnam in March and have 2-3 days in my itinerary to spend in either Hue or Hoi An - but I can't decide!

Can anyone share their experiences within these cities to help me choose between the two destinations?

Thanks!

Hoi An. Incredibly beautiful town with great shopping food and nature surrounding. Hue is not bad but not much to see and do beyond the palace and tombs. 2 months ago

I agree. If you have not seen Hoi An then you missed one of the best parts of Vietnam! 2 months ago

I did Vietnam with G Adventures in December, Hoi An is better if you like shopping but the experience was spoiled by flooding. We toured Hue and surrounding countryside on back of motorscooter - fab and you must see the beautiful village of Thanh Toan Bridge with the farm museum if you choose Hue, check the reviews on Tripadvisor 2 months ago

Hoi An is one of the most beautiful places in Asia ( hell, in the world) and not to be missed. Make sure to rent bikes and ride around in the country side and villages around the town, and also ride up to An Bang beach ( avoid Cua Dai). 2 months ago

Hoi An - lantern town. It's beautiful and has lots of temples to visit in the old town and plenty of narrow back streets to get lost in. I did a Gadventures tour and it was my favourite place. I'm really not a fan of shopping but did buy some silver jewellery. If you want to get some clothes made it is the place to go. 2 months ago

I'd have to go with Hue. The Citadel and Forbidden City are interesting, even if you have to visit when it's raining - as we did. We also very much enjoyed visiting the Nguyen mausoleums in the area as well as the dragon boat ride on the Perfume River. 2 months ago

Both places have their unique charms. In Hue we took a cooking class and visited the Floating Markets (by boat, of course!). In Hoi An we rode in a small basket boat and later helped the local fisherman cast their majestic fishing nets (also by boat). The water is the best way to get the feel and understanding of the history and culture of these people. I wouldn't miss it. 2 months ago

Both!!! Hue is a fascinating city with the old Citadel and where the huge firefight took place during the Vietnam war. Walking through it makes one wonder how anyone survived with all the bullet holes everywhere in the buildings.

Hoi An is great! I love walking around Hoi An and if you have a favorite dress, suit, coat, anything of clothing, take it with you and there are tailors in Hoi An that will make and exact copy of the clothing for you, dirt cheap. I cycle toured through Vietnam numerous times and the last time, 2 years ago, I had along a pair of North Face adventure pants. A tailor made me three pair, in different colors of the exact same material for $10 each; I'd paid like $100 for the North Face pair. I still have the copy pants and wear them a lot. Lot of interesting things to see in Hoi An, the old houses with the French architecture. And the food in Hoi An (and Vietnam) is to die for. Love the fact that I can buy 2 large fresh spring rolls (not deep fried stuff) with small shrimp, and veggies in it, for $0.50 total and that includes the famous Vietnamese coffee. In Colorado, I get 2 dinky small spring rolls that are stale for $8.

Go to both places! And enjoy! 2 months ago

One of my favorite places in the world is Hoi An. I would go back in a minute and we do not go back to many places twice. The food, the atmosphere, the shopping all were wonderful. Hue just did not have the same atmosphere for us. 2 months ago

Both. Hue is given less support in the responses, but it has food you won't get in Hoi An, as well as the palace/museum are really good. Also, don't miss biking in both places. Hue has some interesting sites along the river, but biking the Hoi An countryside is amazing (if you go at night by a frog pond, that's an experience hard to match.) 2 months ago
